Aim and Scope

This multi-disciplinary project aims to advance our knowledge of medieval deserted sites from the 12th to 15th centuries in Iceland. To fully understand the complexity of the social factors of the appearance and the abandonment of such sites, we draw on a raft of evidence. We will examine historical records, especially Jarðabók, as well as look at how these sites manifested archaeologically in the landscape.

We will carry out new below-ground archaeological work in the south, west and east of Iceland. High-quality material previously gathered in the Two-Valley project in North Iceland will also be analysed in a new way. Additionally, archaeological sites that have been surveyed and are recorded in Ísleif, the database of Institute of Archaeology in Iceland, will be critically examined with humanities-led GIS approach.
